Catalan Director General for Innovation Daniel Marco spoke in an exclusive interview with Cointelegraph editor-in-chief Alex Cohen about some important measures that the government has taken to make the region a digital center. The interview was conducted at the European Blockchain Convention (EBC) 2022.
Marco explained that the COVID-19 pandemic over the past two years has helped the digital economy get more attention. He cited Europe as an example, which is working on the digitization of the energy business and other digital businesses.

Marco has been Director of the SmartCatalonia Government Strategy since 2014 and leads the initiative. With this, Catalonia is to become an important global “smart country”, i.e. a “smart country”. With the help of blockchain technology and the Metaverse, the minister is working on a fully digital economy oriented to the physical world.
He announced that the government was working on building a Catalan metaverse called Cataverse. He explained that:
“Cataverse will use the Catalan language and have a connection to Catalan culture. That’s what we want to have in this metaverse. Catalan institutions that do something for culture and can do that in the metaverse.”
The Catalan Minister of Innovation also explained the government’s plans to make Barcelona a digital center. A lot depends on the professionals. The government has already introduced various measures and university programs to promote these professionals. He also said that:
“We have a very strict policy for attracting specialists from universities. But we also have qualification programs like boot camps and other activities because we need different profiles.”
He added that the government is trying to achieve a mix of both, that is, to promote new professionals and attract more companies with a friendly working environment.
He also talked about blockchain projects where tourists can interact in Barcelona. The minister cited a project as an example, which is about personal health care. But there are also some other projects that are about public transport
