The new generation of VR viewers based on microdisplay screens could arrive next year.
Company eMaginspecializing in the creation of microdisplays OLED, has shared in the chat with your investors about the results of the third quarter of this year that the screen prototype of virtual reality are preparing has been approved by one of its members “first class”, whom hope to give these devices in the second quarter of 2019.
“Our consumer electronics partner needs very high brightness; very high resolution, which is necessary for a wide field of view; and no screendoor effect. We are the only company with the OLED design and process capable of making this display,” says Andrew G. Sculley, CEO of eMagin.
As for the screen itself, the company seems to be talking about the same model they were working on last year, an OLED microdisplay system with a resolution of 2048×2048 pixels, RGB matrix and 500 nits of brightness (data we see on its website), although it could well be another version with even 5,000 nits. On this occasion, they shared that this client will allow them to offer the solution to other companies in order to boost the VR market.
“This consumer company is very interesting for us, because they will allow us to sell the screens to other companies, once they have it and have seen it. It’s a VR display, this is the display that everyone needs. And one of the reasons I can’t help but think that VR doesn’t take off is that the screens aren’t what you need. This screen is. It meets the requirements, very high resolution, very high speed, some of the things we’ve put into it like addressing all the pixels at once, global addressing, very high brightness, full color, that’s what it takes. So we’re really excited for this customer to see this screen,” Sculley explains.
As for the partner they talk about, Sculley says that this company could be one of the many interested in VR take off to sell other products, as he points out could be GPUs/CPUs/software, since “they will not necessarily be the main manufacturer of viewers in the world, but they want this market to take off”. We do not know who this partner they are talking about, but it should be remembered that last year the company indicated that they had the interest of AMD and other manufacturers of viewers, plus that Apple, Valve and LG were related to a purchase of shares that ultimately did not take place.
eMagin’s technology will allow viewers with smaller form factors that will include smaller screens with advanced optics to offer a high viewing angle, they explain.
