Help your teen move safely online

Our children are curious and inventive, even if it can sometimes lead to negative things. Worst of all, our children cannot keep their hands off what they are not allowed to touch. If we tell our teens not to click on this link, then most likely they do because it’s kind of exciting and dangerous. But often it has the consequences, and therefore it is important to teach them about the consequences.
Tell them the consequences
When children are not aware of how to navigate the internet, there can be major consequences. It was seen in the Umbrella case, where a number of Danish young people were charged with sharing infringing material of minors. Even though some of the youngsters probably knew they were doing something wrong, it’s important that you teach your child why it’s not okay.
It is therefore good to ask your child some questions about their internet use and teach them about the GDPR. Are their social media profiles online? Do they often share things on the web? Do they read terms when downloading new apps? Show them the consequences of this by searching for their name on the web. When they see that many of their statuses and pictures are free for everyone, they hopefully change their mind about what they share. Remind them to have code and antivirus on their devices, as it is important that their computer is protected from hackers and they do not lose valuable information.
Make it a breeze for them
It can be difficult as a parent to talk to his children about a difficult subject like this. Sometimes youths are more inclined to read articles about youths like themselves. But if you make small games out of it, like f.ex. “Is it a good idea to share it here?”where they have to come up with the answers themselves, it will be a little easier for them to understand.
