Comics and sci-fi films have for decades predicted the entry of digital glasses, smart computer watches and other magical technology that many people still consider part of the future. Now, however, the exciting gadgets are on the way fast, and we give you an insight into Google’s plans here.
These technological objects, which in one way or another can be worn on the body, has today been given the English name “wearables”, which comes from the even longer words, “wearable computers”. The development is enormously exciting to follow, as it is now that one will no longer just consider computers as objects, but instead as an extension of the human body.
Many companies work on products in this category, but our impression is that Google is clearly at the forefront of the fight. Some of the most exciting products from the company are Google Glass and Android Wear.
Glass is Google’s answer to glasses
One of the most debated gadgets in recent times has undoubtedly been Google’s Glass product. In short, it is a pair of glasses with built-in Android, wireless internet and a small lens at the right eye that allows Google to put a kind of virtual layer on top of reality – this term is also known as augmented reality. In the below video Google tries to capture the effect on video:
The exciting thing about such a product is not only what opportunities open up, but also how it will influence the Society of the future. Should it be acceptable to film other people on the street even if they have no idea? And what if one day you can learn everything about strangers simply by looking at their face? It is both a scary and exciting time that we are going to meet.
Until now, Glass has only been tested by a small group of people, but the 15th. april opens up Google for even more seats. Although it is reserved for US customers, you can read more about it, and likewise the product itself, on the Google website.
Android now turns into a clock
Google not only wants a foothold in the glasses market, but has now also developed a new and simpler interface for Android, so it can run on digital watches, often known as “smartwatches”. As seen in the video below, the technology is very similar to Google Glass, even though the product is now in a different place of the body.
Now watches no longer need to be useless objects that simply show the time, but a device that tells the user about the weather, transport options and nearby shops. And more importantly, in the future you will see that the functionality is actually only limited by our imagination – developers can freely publish programs for the product, which both works by itself, but also extends the functionality of the mobile in your pocket.
Since Google works with many companies, Android Wear will in the future be found on many different products, for example Motorola’s Moto 360, which actually offers a round screen like a normal watch. You can also read more about Wear itself on Google’s developer page.
The competitors are also on the track
While Google’s products are tough to compete with, competitors will certainly not let the company Eat the whole cake. For example, Samsung also has a watch on the street, Galaxy Gear, for which they have made an exciting and very retro advertisement here. Even more exciting, one also plays with virtual realities in the form of Oculus Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus, both of which are also a kind of glasses for use during games and the like.
What products are you looking forward to in this category and can you imagine one day merging with gadgets like these? Give your opinion in the form of a comment under the article.
