It seems that the Samsung HMD already has a name: Gear VR will be presented during the IFA 2014 together with the new Galaxy Note 4, a smartphone with a 2560×1440 pixel screen that seems the perfect complement to this device. Although the hardware is being developed by Samsung, it is Oculus that is taking care of preparing the software for the new toy from the Korean giant.
As SamMobile comments, this Gear VR would be connected to the mobile phone through a USB 3.0 port, since the viewer has a touchpad that will allow us to interact with the contents without the need for a joystick or external device, and we cannot forget that our mobile phone will be inside Gear VR and we will not be able to touch the screen. In addition to the touchpad, we will have a practical button that will activate the mobile camera and we will be able to see what we have in front of us without having to remove the viewfinder.
Samsung is going to create, together with Oculus, a lot of apps for Gear VR. Theater, 360 Player and Gallery will be available at the entrance. In addition to this, there will be an SDK for other developers to start creating experiences. Probably the launch of Gear VR represents the biggest push for virtual reality so far, since the advertising machinery of a giant like Samsung will be in charge of announcing it with great fanfare and many more people will start to find out about what is coming to us in the coming years.
