Travis the translator, a pocket translator capable of translating up to 80 different languages instantly thanks to the help of Artificial Intelligence.
How many times are we not limited by language? Whether closing an operation between companies from different continents, traveling abroad to enjoy a change of scenery or trying to help a foreigner in your own city, we always find certain difficulties to understand those people around us. This little translator promises to break down the barriers that are always involved in not knowing the language of your interlocutor.
Perhaps it went unnoticed by the tremendous media impact generated, among other things, by the return of Nokia and its model 3310, but during the last edition of the Mobile World Congress, at the beginning of March 2017 in Barcelona, this pocket instant voice translator was presented.
Small but thug
Travis presents an interesting solution for travelers and entrepreneurs who may encounter such limitations. In addition, the device poses a simple way of use because with the press of a button it begins to work.
Artificial Intelligence is able to learn and understand the context and carry out the digital signal processing (DSP) of voice with good performance and without delay thanks to a quad core processor, which is accompanied by a microphone and a speaker dynamically boosted to ensure high audio quality. It also has WiFi and 4G connectivity, and offers us the possibility of translating online or offline.
In addition, for greater privacy, it is possible to connect the device to headphones or other Bluetooth devices and has a battery with twelve hours of autonomy on a single charge. The price of this gadget is 199 dollars, about 182 euros, but it is already available in pre-sale with a price from 99 dollars.
Origin and functional design
Travis CEO Lennart vander Ziel said: “We designed this solution so that it can be used without looking, which makes it possible for the user not to be distracted. This way, in addition to voice translations, each person could participate in your conversations without losing eye contact and body language.”
Travis is the result of international collaboration between Rotterdam (Netherlands), Boston and New York (USA) and Shenzhen (China). In order to carry out its distribution, the startup has started a crowfunding campaign with the intention of reaching $ 80,000 and releasing the product next June.
A closer world
Language barriers are decreasing in an increasingly globalized world. From the Travis team they recognize that their objective, from the design and manufacture of the device, was to overcome the obstacles that present in many occasions the different languages and dialects, and to get closer to the different cultures that coexist in the world, either for mere leisure or work issues.
