Of the 191 million devices compatible with the main mobile virtual reality platforms, 96.5% are compatible with Gear VR and 3.5% with Daydream.
Peter Warman, CEO of Newzoo, has shared some relevant data, included in the company’s latest report on the global state of mobile phones and tablets, in which it includes the potential market for mobile virtual reality. According to the report, in February 2017 there were a total of 184.5 million Gear VR-compatible devices worldwide and a total of 5.6 million Daydream-compatible. Which means that of all the mobiles out there, 6.6% are compatible with Gear VR and 0.2% with Daydream. For Warman, if Apple entered the mobile virtual reality market with its 6S and 7 series, it would add 9.4% more devices, surpassing Samsung terminals. In addition, the United States is the country that has the most mobile phones ready for virtual reality.
Warman has also made it clear that mobile virtual reality in the short term represents a potentially much larger market opportunity than desktop, despite the great commercial success that devices such as PlayStation VR have had, which has sold close to one million units in its first months.
Finally, Warman ends by commenting on some factors that will contribute to the mass adoption of mobile virtual reality: improving the quality of the experiences offered by relatively affordable devices such as Cardboard, overcoming compatibility problems, and promoting content that meets the wide variety of interests of users.
