About a year ago, Netflix decided that it does not want to stagnate in the production of series and movies, so it is also entering the video game market. Until now the company had only been concerned with licensing games and acquiring a couple of studios, but finally it wants to start creating ideas from scratch, through a new studio.
In a blog post, Amir Rahimi, Netflix’s vice president of video game studios, confirmed that the company has just formally founded its first studio, in the city of Helsinki in Finland, which will be led by creative Marko Lastikka.
“This is another step in our vision to build a world-class game studio that will bring a variety of charming and deeply engaging original games, without ads or in-app purchases, to our hundreds of millions of members worldwide,” Rahimi explained.
This will be the 4th. Netflix studio, the 1st. in being founded and not bought, and the 2nd. in Helsinki. At the moment, Netflix owns Next Games, Nicht School Studio and Boss Fight Entertainment. The vice president assured that each one has its strengths and virtues to provide gamers of all tastes.
Of course, Rahimi recalled that making games can take years but he was very satisfied with what the company has achieved in its first year of commitment to the video game market. And boy is it no small thing, because the company plans to have at least 50 mobile titles in its catalog by the end of 2022.
