Arctic Connect will connect fiber-optic communication line continentocean Alexandrov
Megaphone and Rosgeologia signed an agreement for joint marine research in the framework of the project on the laying of underwater fiber-optic communication line from Europe to Asia.
The expedition will begin on 5 August 2020 in Murmansk and will last for three months.
Research vessel Rosgeologia “Professor Logachev” will be the most difficult from the point of view of ice conditions on the route in the Barents, Kara, Laptev, East Siberian and
Chukchi seas. The total length of the test in 2020 the area will be 6500 km.
In 2020, experts will conduct a preliminary study of the bottom topography and determine safe routes of the route in the Arctic seas. The second part of the survey will be held in 2021 and will include
detailed study of engineering conditions for the laying of a submarine cable, including the study of rocks of the bottom. Similar work is planned for segments of the communication line outside the Russian waters. Sea
the study will be the first phase of the project, they needed to determine the optimal route of the communication lines along the Arctic zone of Russia, and construction of taps to
the coastal territory.
FOCL will provide users with an unprecedented short time of signal transmission with minimal latency, which is not offered by any of the existing lines. It is expected that the taps built
from the main line, will allow to provide communication to consumers of the Arctic and the Far East, including enterprises of fuel and energy complex, which will contribute to socio-economic
development of the region. The start-up of communication lines with a bandwidth of 200 Tbit/s will help to cope with the growing volume of global traffic, analysts say.
