This system would make a virtual character follow the movement that we trace when moving the mobile to move around the environment.
A new research carried out by Disney Research, has developed a new system for AR displacement. At first instance, MotionStick he used a device connected to the mobile that projected a pointer to guide a digital character through the surfaces of our environment. Now, an evolution of this method of locomotion, would allow us to do so using only the content player device, using, as a position indicator, the center of the view generated by the camera itself.
In this video we see how, simply by holding down the touch screen, the figure that we control will always try to find the center of the view to move towards it, doing it at a speed equivalent to how fast we move the mobile from one side to the other. It also offers the possibility of jumping when looking up significantly, even landing where we indicate, or on the other hand, stay in the air until we release it.
It seems a very intuitive and efficient solution as a displacement scheme for future platform games or exploration in augmented reality, replacing the joysticks and digital buttons that hinder the view, by a series of natural gestures that would allow a very precise control.
