Encrypting folders and files in Windows
Here is a free encryption program which can store all your private documents and pictures securely. The program is called SafeHouse Explorer and makes it very simple to store / protect one’s personal information that does not concern others. The program creates an additional drive on your computer, just like your c: – that is, where your Windows installation is located.
Download the program here: SafeHouse Explorer
1. After downloading the program and installing it, press “New Volume”
2. Press next
3. Now you need to choose where it stores your encrypted file and what name it should have. I have chosen to save mine on c: since I have the most space there.
4. Here you need to select the size of the drive, as well as you can see how much space is left on c:. – unless, of course, that’s where you save your file.
5. Type your password 2 times and see the strength of your password.
6. Here you will see an overview of everything, and you have to press “Create Volume” at the bottom.
7. Now it has finished creating your encrypted drive on your computer, it may take some time depending on how much you have chosen it to fill in MB or GB.
8. When it is finished, you can see the image below. Here I have put 2 files in and now lock my drive by pressing the one I have marked with a Red Square.
9. Now it’s locked and the drive won’t come in. “This Computer” or “Computer“as it is called in Vista. With at Point 6 we chose to make a shortcut to open our encrypted drive – double click on the shortcut.
10. Now ask it for the password we gave it when we created the drive.
11. Once it’s unlocked, you can access it again. “This Computer” or “Computer“as it is called in Vista.
