The Montain View company continues to buy companies to reinforce other fields in its global strategy. He has transcended that he has created an ethics committee to monitor the correct use of this technology.
The interest of Google to buy other companies from sectors with great potential in the near future and that have a key presence in our daily life. Since its foundation there are already more than 140 companies acquired by Google to strengthen its position in different fields. Some of these recent purchases have been companies such as Nest and Boston Dynamic, known the first in the field of the Internet of Things and the second in military robotics.
But Google continues to pull out the wallet and has just made public that the purchase of DeepMind, an English artificial intelligence company. As indicated on the DeepMind website, the first commercial applications of its algorithms have been aimed at simulation, e-commerce and games. On the one hand, with this purchase Google manages to acquire talent: the founder of DeepMind, Demis Hassabis is known for being the creator of the addictive game Theme Park. On the other hand, Google acquires technology for machine learning and artificial neural networks.
However, this is not Google’s first approach to artificial intelligence. A few weeks ago, we echoed in Think Big from a Google X Labs experiment on machine learning.
Monitoring the use of technology
One of the most striking points of this acquisition is that, apparently, a ethical council formed by members of both DeepMind and Google to control the use made of artificial intelligence. Like many technological innovations that are emerging, how it is used can generate an intense ethical debate in society. For example, human cloning, the use of stem cells or the more recent use of surveillance drones in public air spaces are some issues that have voices for and against.
More and more critics are warning of the large amount of information that large Internet companies handle and study about their users, Big Data, and that it allows them to know and predict our tastes and behaviors. A few days ago the media reported that Amazon you could send orders to our house, before we even made your purchase. As Google and other companies advance in the field of artificial intelligence, greater public debate and control over use will be needed let big companies make this technology.
