Software Modernization, Part 2 Modernize or Redevelop Legacy Software?

When old software gets old, the question quickly arises whether a modernization is sufficient or a complete new development is advisable. There are good reasons for both variants.

Sometimes it is difficult to choose a solution, although it would be necessary – it is too hasty to start the red pencil with the software inventory, but it is also not right.
Especially in companies, there are often very old software solutions. They have grown organically over time and are often poorly documented, but in many cases provide a solid work donkey for daily tasks. As with any software, however, even with such “legacy” solutions, a limit has been reached at some point at which action must be taken.
Sometimes it happens that new standards and interfaces have to be integrated or simply the required performance or quality in terms of hardware, performance, security or quality are no longer achieved. Or if the software produces enormous personnel costs due to its age. In all these cases, it is necessary to react.
